2011-2012 YEAR OF THE DJOKER

Djokovic

Much has been said and written about Novak Djokovic's 2011 season. The stats speak in volume-
Year Ending #1 ATP Ranking

3 Grand Slams (Aus Open, Wimbledon, US Open)
70-6 in Win-Loss for the year
Beat Rafael Nadal in 6 Finals in a row
Went on a 41 match winning streak from Jan-May
Won 13 sets 6-0
Led Ricoh ATP Match Facts in return games won (39%)
points won returning 2nd serve (58%)
No. 2 in break points converted (48%)
Set an all-time men’s record in season prize money with $12,619,803

Its easy to forget that Djokovic a few years back was well known as someone who would throw in the towel when the going got tough (retired in a few big matches with breathing problems, heat problems etc)
Even Roger Federer once said "well look he's not the guy who has never giving up before, he gave up against me last year in Monaco with a sore throat, its disappointing to see, those are the kind of things you wonder about"

So what made this guy turn around and become the most dominant player on tour in the past year?

Many would say the Gluten-free diet has changed him.
In 2010 Djokovic sought the advice of Dr Igor Cetojevic, a nutritionist who holds a diploma from the Indian Institute of Magnetotherapy in Delhi and has studied traditional Chinese medicine. Dr Cetojevic found that Djokovic suffered from Celiac disease and instructed him to cut gluten out of his diet. Since doing so Djokovic has won four Grand Slams.

WHAT WAS THE REAL SECRET BEHIND THE DJOKOVIC SUCCESS?

One of the key's to Djokovic's current physical and mental well-being has been the introduction of A NEW FITNESS TRAINER. Back in April 2009 he hired Gebhard Phil-Gritsch, Thomas Muster's former trainer (muster was one of the fittest and tougest competitors in the history of the sport) as his new fitness coach.

In hiring Phil-Gritsch, Djokovic has shown a determination to improve upon an area which had been a weakness in the past. He had developed a reputation for failing to last the distance, having retired four times during Grand Slam matches.
"I've been putting a lot of work into the physical stuff," Djokovic said. "It's hard when you switch fitness coaches. You don't want to make a big change because it might ruin your system, so he adapted to my body and got me into his routine. It's been working well. We've put a lot of work into the legs, into my movement, because this is where I have a good feeling about my game. My advantage is my running ability. I like to be dynamic and show a lot of energy on the court."

“The better you get, the more you have to go into details, into small things, to optimize every little angle of the game,” Djokovic’s trainer, Gebhard Phil-Gritsch, said. “In this stage, if we can get 1 percent better, he might make a big jump. These guys are so good. We are already talking about the optimum. It’s just a little bit here and a little bit there.”

Without the help of Phil-Gritsch I doubt Djokovic would have been the player he is today two and a half years after teaming up with him. The physical training they do off court is kept secret but they do show glimpses of it sometimes. Here is a video we filmed at the ATP Tour Finals in November 2011. It shows Djokovic doing his resistance band work with Phil-Gritsch holding the bands.

One thing is for sure, Djokovic is a player who will leave no stone unturned in his quest to be the best he can be.
