Its easy to forget that Djokovic a few years back was well known as someone who would throw in the towel when the going got tough (retired in a few big matches with breathing problems, heat problems etc)
Even Roger Federer once said "well look he's not the guy who has never giving up before, he gave up against me last year in Monaco with a sore throat, its disappointing to see, those are the kind of things you wonder about"
So what made this guy turn around and become the most dominant player on tour in the past year?
Many would say the Gluten-free diet has changed him.
In 2010 Djokovic sought the advice of Dr Igor Cetojevic, a nutritionist who holds a diploma from the Indian Institute of Magnetotherapy in Delhi and has studied traditional Chinese medicine. Dr Cetojevic found that Djokovic suffered from Celiac disease and instructed him to cut gluten out of his diet. Since doing so Djokovic has won four Grand Slams.
WHAT WAS THE REAL SECRET BEHIND THE DJOKOVIC SUCCESS?
One of the key's to Djokovic's current physical and mental well-being has been the introduction of A NEW FITNESS TRAINER. Back in April 2009 he hired Gebhard Phil-Gritsch, Thomas Muster's former trainer (muster was one of the fittest and tougest competitors in the history of the sport) as his new fitness coach.
In hiring Phil-Gritsch, Djokovic has shown a determination to improve upon an area which had been a weakness in the past. He had developed a reputation for failing to last the distance, having retired four times during Grand Slam matches.
"I've been putting a lot of work into the physical stuff," Djokovic said. "It's hard when you switch fitness coaches. You don't want to make a big change because it might ruin your system, so he adapted to my body and got me into his routine. It's been working well. We've put a lot of work into the legs, into my movement, because this is where I have a good feeling about my game. My advantage is my running ability. I like to be dynamic and show a lot of energy on the court."
“The better you get, the more you have to go into details, into small things, to optimize every little angle of the game,” Djokovic’s trainer, Gebhard Phil-Gritsch, said. “In this stage, if we can get 1 percent better, he might make a big jump. These guys are so good. We are already talking about the optimum. It’s just a little bit here and a little bit there.”
Without the help of Phil-Gritsch I doubt Djokovic would have been the player he is today two and a half years after teaming up with him. The physical training they do off court is kept secret but they do show glimpses of it sometimes. Here is a video we filmed at the ATP Tour Finals in November 2011. It shows Djokovic doing his resistance band work with Phil-Gritsch holding the bands.
One of the things that is often overlooked in a players game is their style of play.
Novak Djokovic has been able to dominate players the past year so comfortably because he is using a tactic that gives his opponents very little time and he tires them out over the course of a match.
Djokovic is standing closer to the baseline than most Pros and taking the ball on the rise (before the ball starts dropping) and is therefore taking the opponents time away.
Andre Agassi was the last player to do this tactic so well and now Djokovic is playing very similar.
Against Nadal this tactic works perfectly as Nadal's heavy topspin bounces right up into Djokovic's hitting zone and Djokovic can then flatten the ball out and hit winners easier.
One of Rafael Nadal's best tricks is to put his heavy topspin Forehand onto right handed players backhands (Federer has been destroyed many times by this exact tactic) but against Djokovic it simply doesnt work as Djokovic has a very strong Double handed backhand which he can take very early and drill down the line for a winner.
If Djokovic was a more defensive player (Murray's and Nadal's style) then there is no way that he would have one all of those finals against Nadal in 2011.
Jimmy Connors said that Djokovic gives his opponents problems by playing "a little bit old-school, taking the ball earlier, catching the ball on the rise and driving the ball flat." Connors adds that a lot of the topspin that Djokovic's opponents drive at him comes right into his zone, thus his ability to turn defense into offense well.
